31 Days of Living Art: A Girl Named Adventure
My brother and sister-in-law are expecting a baby. We sat around their kitchen table last night after dinner (love those kitchen table talks) and talked about baby names. Ila for our grandmother, Claire for our great-grandmother. Gunnar means "warrior", Isaac means "he laughs."
Today I called myself Worthy.
Sometimes I call myself Brave. Sometimes it's Kindness. Sometimes it's Passion. Sometimes it's Peace. Sometimes I'm Servant. Sometimes I'm Courage. Sometimes I'm Hope. Sometimes I'm Joy. Sometimes I call myself Grace. Sometimes it's Fierce, or Gentle, or Humble, or Bold.
And somewhere inside of me is a girl named Adventure, and she's restless. She's going to wreak havoc on my life. And I can't wait. I've got all these dreams and things I want to do, places I want to go, and Adventure is stirring and nudging me to life. So I'm calling myself Adventure because that's what I'm craving, and I want to speak it into existence.
You've got this power in the words you say, the Names you give yourself and others. You are the sum of the things you have spoken into your life (I think Josh Cossey deserves the credit for that line!).
So don't call yourself Wounded. Don't call yourself Ugly or Hopeless or Lost. Don't let someone tell you you're Damaged.
Call yourself whatever you need, but make it life-giving. Make it powerful and strong. Make it true. Call your friends and family whatever they need to be spoken to life. Someone needs to be given a Name and an identity that they can't find on their own, so speak it for them. Speak it into existence and watch them believe it and they'll become it.
Names are like prayers. They're blessings or truths we want spoken over that child's life, or legacies we want them to carry.
Some people don't have names that were for specific meanings, they're just pretty names, but they still mean something.
My name is Mackenzie. It means "fire-born," which isn't why my parents named me Mackenzie, but I'll take it. Diane is my middle name, it's a name I share with my mom.
Some people call me Kenzie. Or Kenz. Or Mac. Or Z. Or Mac Attack. (I think nicknames are endearing, like a special identity you're given that's even more special than your full name).
My name is my identity. It's what you use to label me to separate me from the next person. Other than the names we're given on our birth certificate are the names we give ourselves. I think of how powerful it is when we speak those things over our lives, when we call ourselves or others by the Names we think are merited.
There's a lot of different names-different identities, different truths-that I give myself when I need that specific thing spoken over my life the most.
